The Unit 3/4 Physics Class had an amazing opportunity to visit the Australian Synchrotron, one of Australia’s most advanced scientific research facilities, aiding innovation across all fields of science.
During the tour, we explored the behaviour of an electron within the particle accelerator, how it is accelerated to near light speeds and is directed around a large storage ring to produce synchrotron light used for various scientific purposes.
As a part of our visit, we were given a tour of the main parts of the facility covering areas that benefit from use of the synchrotron like the IMBL – Medical Imaging Bay and the XFM – X-ray Fluorescence Microscopy Bay.
We later also conducted a few experiments of our own, looking at both single and double slit diffraction of light using a laser and using spectroscopy to explore the emission spectra of different elements. These experiments helped reinforce key concepts that are to be studied in class ahead of our SAC.
This trip helped us gain insight into the many ways the synchrotron contributes to society. Research use the synchrotron to study diseases, develop new medicines, improve agricultural practices and so much more.
Overall, the visit was both educational and inspiring, helping all of us to experience the brilliance of human innovation and physics to help those around us.
