Core Curriculum

Years 11 and 12

In Years 11 and 12, students work towards securing the best possible future for themselves after graduating, whether that involves future study or employment. Students have the option to undertake the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) during both Years 11 and 12, or to follow a VCE Vocational Major.

In addition to their studies, senior students immerse themselves in initiatives that enrich their learning experience. Regardless of your son’s talents, you can be sure he’ll find an aspect of College life in which to involve himself.

In his Senior Years, your son may choose to pursue a Victorian Certificate of Education. The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the certificate that the majority of students in Victoria receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education. The VCE provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university or TAFE, and to employment.

Assessment and Reporting

Outcomes are the basis on which the satisfactory completion of VCE Units 1 to 4 is determined. Each outcome comprises both knowledge and skills. Each VCE Unit includes a set of Outcomes which must be achieved for satisfactory completion of each Unit.

All VCE studies also include a range of assessment tasks and an end of semester examination. Students will receive a numerical grade for each of these assessments. The numerical grades on semester reports will be used to inform parents/guardians and students of the student’s level of achievement.

A student’s level of achievement for all Units 3 and 4 studies is determined by School Assessed Coursework (SACs) and examination(s). Some studies will also have School Assessed Tasks (SATs). The weighting of the SACs, SATs and examination(s) vary from study to study.

For Unit 3 and 4 subjects, teachers provide the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority with scores representing an assessment of the student’s level of achievement in SACs and SATs. Along with the exam for a particular subject, this will be used to calculate a student’s ATAR score. ATAR scores are an important enrolment benchmark used for entry into many tertiary institutions.

Subject Selection Prerequisites

It should be noted that a number of VCE subjects have subject selection prerequisites. Detailed subject selection prerequisites are provided to your son in the years leading up to Year 11 and 12.

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) at Year 11

In Year 11, students must study:

  • English Units 1/2 (Or Literature)
  • Religion and Society Unit 1, as part of Oratory/RE
  • Five additional Units 1/2 subjects, or four Units 1/2 subjects and one Units 3/4 subject
Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) at Year 12

In Year 12, students must study:

  • English Units Units 3/4 or Literature 3/4 (Unless already done in Year 11)
  • Religion and Society Unit 2, as part of Oratory (Unless they have already completed Unit 3/4 in Year 11)
  • Four additional Units 3/4 subjects
