Year 12 Chemistry Investigates: Does Your Snack Contain the Energy It Claims?

Have you ever wondered whether the energy value stated on your snack’s packaging is actually accurate?

Using their knowledge of thermochemistry, molar enthalpy, and stoichiometry, the Year 12 Chemistry class calculated the energy per gram of various snacks and compared their results to the nutritional information on the packaging.

They carried out this investigation by burning each snack and measuring the temperature change in a calorimeter.

The experiment also gave them the opportunity to apply their key scientific skills, evaluating the accuracy, precision, and validity of their findings.
