The China Student Exchange Program gave our visiting students the opportunity to experience Australian school life, practise their English and develop a deeper understanding of a new culture. At the same time, our Salesian College Chadstone students learned to welcome students from another country, communicate across cultures and appreciate different perspectives.
At the beginning of the program, some students may have felt nervous or uncertain as they entered an unfamiliar environment. With the support of teachers, classmates and learning buddies they gradually became more comfortable and confident. Through classroom activities, junior sport, lunchtime conversations and other school experiences students formed friendships and created meaningful memories together.
The learning that took place during the program extended well beyond the classroom. Students developed their communication, cooperation and problem solving skills while learning about different languages, traditions and educational experiences.
As educators, we were particularly pleased to see students supporting one another. Learning buddies played an important role in helping the visiting students settle into school routines and feel included. The benefits were mutual, with our local students also gaining confidence, broadening their perspectives and developing a greater appreciation of cultural diversity.
Although saying goodbye was difficult, the friendships and understanding created through the exchange extended beyond the program. We hope all students will remember the experience as an important part of their education and as an opportunity to become more open minded, respectful and globally aware young people. Programs like this help prepare students to participate positively in an increasingly connected world.
