Yesterday, we came together to celebrate International Women’s Day with an afternoon tea, honouring the women who inspire, lead, and make a difference in our community. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the work still ahead to achieve equality.
We were privileged to hear from two incredible women. Dalal Smiley, CEO of Wellsprings for Women, who shared her journey from seeking refuge in Australia to leading an organisation that provides vital education and support services for women facing challenges such as migration, family violence, and poverty. Kristen Kearns, mother of Luke in Year 11, spoke about her extraordinary achievement of swimming the English Channel in 2024 to raise awareness and funds for headspace, alongside her dedication to long-distance swimming and supporting aged care and disability services. We were also delighted to welcome Avila school leaders, whose presence reinforced the importance of young voices in shaping a future where equality, resilience, and leadership continue to thrive.
This morning, we continued the celebrations at Avila College’s International Women’s Day breakfast, where we had the privilege of hearing from Kala Gare. Fresh from her award-winning performance as Sybylla Melvyn in the 2024 MTC sellout season of My Brilliant Career, Kala’s career has gone from strength to strength. She has taken on powerful female roles in productions such as SIX, Rent, Twelfth Night, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Bright Star, captivating audiences with her performances and vocals.
International Women’s Day reminds us that we all have a role to play in shaping a more inclusive world. We can call out stereotypes, challenge discrimination, question bias, and celebrate the achievements of women. Just as importantly, sharing our knowledge and encouragement with others helps create lasting change.
Thank you to everyone who came together in celebration and support of women everywhere.
