We are thrilled to congratulate Christian Moraes on his incredible achievement of being drafted to the AFL! This is a testament to his hard work, talent, and dedication both on and off the field.
Reflecting on his time at Salesian College Chadstone, Christian shared how the College’s values played a significant role in shaping his development as both a player and a person.
Can you share how your time at Salesian College Chadstone shaped your development as a player and a person?
The College values certainly shaped me as a person during my time at the school, particularly the emphasis on kindness to everyone. The teachers always connected with us as students, and I felt consistently supported. They were excellent role models, and their values definitely had a lasting impact on me.
What role did the College’s Sports Academy programme play in helping you develop as an athlete?
I think the values instilled in me through the Sports Academy from Year 7 were incredibly important. The programme was also my first introduction to gym work, which is now a significant part of my football. Mr Sellwood emphasised discipline within the programme, ensuring we all worked hard—something that has stayed with me ever since. The programme made school enjoyable, knowing I would be coming in each week to play sport.
Were there any specific coaches, teachers, or mentors at Salesian College who had a lasting impact on your journey?
There are a few. During the two years I spent away from the College, Mr Sellwood would regularly check in to see how I was doing. Both Mr Sellwood and Mr Hill would come to watch some of my games outside school, which reflects the strong sense of community at Salesian. Teachers like Ms Tsiavis and Ms Capomolla have also had a lasting impact, particularly this year. Their persistence and dedication stand out, and the College is fortunate to have teachers like them.
How did you balance academics and sports during Year 12?
Although it was challenging, I feel that academics and sports actually supported each other by relieving stress at different times. I had structures in place, and the school was excellent in understanding my situation. My teachers adjusted my workload as needed, allowing me to give my best in both areas.
What advice would you give current students at Salesian College who dream of following in your footsteps into professional sport?
I’d say two main things: first, you have to enjoy it. Secondly, be highly competitive—strive to be better than the person next to you and push yourself to get the most out of your abilities. If you rely on talent alone, you’re unlikely to reach the highest level.
On behalf of Salesian College Chadstone, we congratulate Christian on the commitment and perseverance he has demonstrated over the course of his time at Salesian College Chadstone and during 2024. We look forward to hearing about all of his future accomplishments.
