Trusting in the risen Lord in this Easter season, I convey to you the death of our brother and friend, Don Giulio Cavarzan, in the evening on Tuesday 16th May at the Salesian Retirement Home, Mons. Cognata, Treviso Castello Di Godego in Italy.
Born in May 1932 in Maser Treviso in Italy, Giulio entered the Salesian pre-novitiate in Verona at 18 years of age, and came to Australia as a young missionary after his first profession in 1952. He made his perpetual profession as a Salesian into the hands of Fr B M Fedrigotti in Sunbury on 31st January 1958. He spent two years in Engadine and one year in Brooklyn Park as a practical trainee before returning to Italy for theological studies 1959. Giulio was ordained a priest in Italy by Bishop Arduino on 6th April 1963.
Upon returning from Italy, Giulio spent all of his priestly life in the Salesian Community in Chadstone from 1964 as a teacher in the college and chaplain to the Italian communities until 2016 when he decided to retire back in his motherland.
Don Giulio was 91 years of age, 70 years as a professed Salesian and 60 years as a priest. He certainly was a much loved figure not only in Chadstone or in our province, but also among Italian communities in Melbourne particularly in Clayton.
The requiem Mass for Don Giulio Cavarzan took place in Italy on Friday 19th May at 10:30 am local time.
Eternal rest grant unto Don Giulio O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace, amen!
In St John Bosco,
Fr Will Matthews SDB
