In what ways did Salesian prepare you for life beyond school?
Salesian provided us with the ability to make our own decisions and encouraged us to be ourselves. The school gave us countless opportunities to choose pathways that suited our individual strengths and aspirations. Michael pursued a career as a qualified plumber following his VCE VET pathway, while Daniel and I (Robert) took paths toward careers in law. Despite our different directions, Salesian instilled in us the confidence and tools to succeed, no matter where life took us.
Beyond academics, the school emphasised values such as respect and professionalism. Michael still talks about his early years at Salesian, where he was taught to stand when someone entered the classroom, regardless of who they were. Small but significant lessons like these shaped our approach to the professional world beyond school.
How did your teachers contribute to your personal growth and development?
The passion our teachers had for their subjects was contagious, and that passion made learning all the more enjoyable. One standout example is Ms. Marshall, whose love for Legal Studies resonated deeply with all three of us and ultimately influenced our career choices.
Beyond subject knowledge, Salesian teachers were approachable and supportive. They encouraged curiosity, welcomed challenging discussions, and always took the time to provide thoughtful, well-explained answers. Ms. Capomolla, our English teacher, was someone we all had at different times—we truly valued the engagement she and so many other teachers fostered. That accessibility and willingness to listen were invaluable aspects of our education.
How would you describe the sense of camaraderie and brotherhood at Salesian?
The brotherhood at Salesian is unlike anything else. Especially in the early years, stepping into a schoolyard filled with older students could be overwhelming, but the sense of belonging made all the difference.
We shared so many laughs and great times, and even now, we find ourselves reminiscing about those moments. One of the simplest yet most special things about Salesian was the sheer number of greetings in the hallways—handshakes, high-fives, or just a “hello” from practically everyone you walked past. That kind of camaraderie is rare, and it created an atmosphere where everyone truly felt like they belonged.
In what ways did the teachings and values at Salesian shape your character?
One of the greatest lessons Salesian instilled in us was the courage to speak up. The school provided countless opportunities for leadership, from class captains and sports captains to student congress meetings where we had a voice in shaping the school community.
A core Salesian teaching that has stayed with us is: Never postpone the good you can do today until tomorrow. Salesian boys are not timid—we are encouraged to stand up for what is right and to help others, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zones. That sense of responsibility and initiative continues to guide us today.
What are some of the most memorable moments you had at Salesian, and how do you look back on them?
It’s difficult to pinpoint just a few moments because every stage of our time at Salesian was filled with its own unique experiences.
The first day of Year 7 stands out—the overwhelming but exhilarating feeling of stepping into a school of over a thousand boys, all in the same uniform, was unforgettable. The middle school years were packed with adventures, especially in Year 9, when we had our own campus. And senior school was an incredible experience, carrying the responsibility of being leaders and role models for the younger students.
Beyond those milestones, the moments we cherish the most were the conversations with teachers, the camaraderie during ACC sports and school events where we were able to represent the school against others, and even the pressures of Year 12. The support we received during the toughest times of our final year is something we now look back on with gratitude and a smile.
How did Salesian help you develop key life skills like leadership and teamwork?
The teachings of Don Bosco are deeply embedded in Salesian life. Values like gratitude, humility, and togetherness were not just taught—they were lived and demonstrated by our teachers and school leaders.
During our own leadership roles, we saw firsthand how figures like Mr. Robert Brennan and Mr. Mark Ashmore led with humility and genuine connection. Both principals in our time made efforts to connect with students, simple chats at lunch time or morning greetings made all the difference. Their leadership set the standard for us, showing us the importance of treating everyone with respect and building strong, supportive communities. Those lessons remain with us today as we navigate our careers and personal lives.
What motivates you to reconnect with Salesian College?
There are several reasons why we believe staying connected to Salesian is important:
- Giving back: Salesian gave so much to us, and we want to contribute to its continued success.
- Preserving great memories and friendships: The experiences we had and the people we met at Salesian are irreplaceable. Staying connected allows us to keep those bonds strong.
- Ensuring the school’s growth for future generations: We hope to see Salesian continue to evolve and improve, so that one day, if we have children of our own, they can experience the same joy and sense of belonging that we did.
As a past pupil, what are you most proud of about your time at Salesian College?
A conversation I had with the late Mr. Robert Brennan has always stayed with me. He once told me that a Salesian boy isn’t perfect—because nobody is—but what defines him is his authenticity. A Salesian boy is real, genuine, and acts with integrity. He may be cheeky at times, but it’s always good-natured.
That idea of authenticity is something I have carried with me ever since. To be genuine, to act with sincerity, and to help others—not for recognition, but simply because it’s the right thing to do—are values that were ingrained in us at Salesian.
Being part of a community that fosters those characteristics is something we are incredibly proud of, and we are grateful to have had the privilege of growing up in such an environment.
