Geometric Patterns in Islamic Art

During term 3, Miss Ma’s Specialist class students explore Islamic art and learnt about the variety of geometric patterns employed by artists.

Students first drew a pattern design on a plain paper including all construction lines and marks made by compass and a straightedge (ruler with no markings).

Then the students combined the single pattern into a tessellation of patterns.

And a final coloured tessellation of the pattern is created by rubbing off any unwanted construction lines.

This task was relatable as it shows how mathematic pattern is used by artists in the real world.
