Weeks 9 and 10 marked the arrival of the Year 9 Community Service Expo, an opportunity for students to identify and explore ways in which they can assist marginalised groups in our society. Students heard from guest speakers and engaged with organisations from our local area, participating in the following sessions:
- CPR training
- Baking and raising funds for St Vinnies food vans
- Refugee awareness
- Homelessness
- Knit One Give One (KOGO)
- Monash Seniors on the Move
The two expo days build the foundations of the community service program all Year 9 students will be a part of throughout the remainder of the year. Students will be working closely with the organisers of the Monash Seniors on the Move Program to provide experiences for the elderly within our local community. Boys will organise and participate in sessions such as:
- Tech savvy seniors
- Armchair travel
- Life stories
- Christmas in July lunch
- Gardening club
This is an extremely exciting experience and one that the Year 9 team is very much looking forward to being a part of.
Mr Chris Ryan
Year 9 Coordinator
On Monday 1 April, all Year 9 students participated in a community service day. We participated in three different activities, KOGO (Knit One Give One), Seniors On the Move and a talk about Homelessness. My favourite session for the day was KOGO. This was my favourite activity because we learnt a new skill that most people didn’t know before. It was also good because we were helping homeless people in a different way to just donating money. The most important thing that I learnt during the community service day was that anyone can become homeless, no matter what circumstances they are currently in. This was important to learn because it demonstrated that you should not take the comfortable position you are in currently for granted, as it could change very quickly.
