Italian Cultural Experience – Italian Study Tour
Students studying Italian at Salesian College are offered the opportunity to participate in a cultural and educational experience through a study tour of Italy of approximately 3 weeks duration. There have been a number of highly successful trips to date.
The trip is offered to Year 9, 10 and 11 students of Italian and has tended to run every second year. It is an opportunity for students of Italian to enrich their language skills while gaining deeper cultural insights into the Italian culture. The itinerary varies from year to year.
On past tours students have had the opportunity to learn about and immerse themselves in the culture of Italian cities such as:
Students have also had the opportunity to visit the birthplace of Don Bosco and as such the tour has given boys the possibility to connect with the Salesian heritage.
The Italian Cultural Experience is made possible thanks to the hard work of Italian teachers at the College who have built up the tour over a number of years and have become experts at planning and structuring the tour so that students are able to get the most out of the experience. In particular Ms Barcellona and Ms Bonne’s contribution to the development of the trip over a number of years should be acknowledged.
Boys who have participated in the trip in past years have expressed an appreciation of all that Italy had to offer. Many of the boys have also gone on to complete VCE Italian having being inspired by the experience of travelling to Italy.
Comments from past participants of the Italian Cultural Experience – 2009
‘An experience that is worthwhile. We were able to see many of the famous landmarks and places that we learn about in class and enjoy the food of Italy.’
‘It teaches you to work with others in a different environment and you gain an appreciation of a different way of life.’
‘The immersion in the culture and language vastly improved our language skills. In particular our ability to speak and understand Italian. We can now communicate more confidently and fluently in the language.’
Frank Scalise and Luke Daidone
