Year 10

Core Curriculum

Year 10

In Year 10, students leave behind the familiarity of the Mannix Campus and begin to lay the foundations for successful academic outcomes. They mature in their outlook, and begin to develop the skills which will hold them in good stead for the next three years and into the future.

An integral part of Year 10 is the consideration of the future possibilities beyond school. As part of the Year 10 Future Focus program, boys spend time evaluating their strengths and weaknesses, and considering careers for which they would be best suited. Students visit the Careers Expo at Caulfield Racecourse, to gather information and resources on VCE, University, TAFE and other possible future pathways. They are also provided with one-on-one Course Advising Sessions, where they develop an individual pathway plan.  The plan takes into consideration boys interests, passions and all relevant tertiary courses and prerequisite subjects.

The Year 10 program consists of a combination of core subjects, as well as a selection of five elective subjects for the year.

Within these elective subjects, highly able Year 10 students may elect to study a VCE Unit 1/2 subject, provided they meet minimum prerequisite requirements outlined by the College. The College also offers Year 10 boys the opportunity to undertake the Year 10 PreCal Program, a precursor to the Applied Learning Program offered in Years 11 and 12.

Year 10 Respectful Relationships Forum

In partnership with Sacred Heart Girls College, in 2017 we launched the Year 10 Respectful Relationships Forum. This event is almost entirely student driven and run, and student leaders from both schools work together to ensure the day is a success. Students listen to guest speakers who share their perspective on social justice issues, as well as relatable advice on how to overcome personal struggles such as anxiety and depression. The day also involves a variety of workshops designed to facilitate open discussion between boys and girls about the need to promote respectful relationships within our community.

The Year 10 Applied Learning (PreCAL) Program

The Year 10 Applied Learning (PreCAL) Program Salesian College Chadstone is committed to the education of the “whole” person. This occurs in a systematic partnership that involves the student, his parents and the many services available to enhance the individual’s growth and development. Guided by the principles of Salesian Education, staff at the College are committed to the holistic development of all students across the spiritual, emotional, social, academic, and physical facets of their education. The College community equally acknowledges that each student learns differently, and that for some students, more directed exploration of pathways during their early stages of senior years contributes to school engagement through relevance and acquired interest. Some students find their schooling to be frustrating and irrelevant and this often results from a lack of direction, absence of goals and continued achievement of poor results.
